The cabin air filter is one of the cheapest parts on your car, and one of the most neglected. Replacing it can make a big difference to your AC and the air you breathe.
What the cabin air filter does
It filters the air coming into the car through the AC and ventilation system, trapping dust, pollen, leaves and other debris before they reach you. Most cars from the last couple of decades have one, usually behind the glove box.
Signs it needs replacing
Weak airflow from the vents, even on high
A musty or mouldy smell when the AC is on
More dust settling on the dashboard
Windows fogging up more easily
Allergies acting up while driving
How often to replace it
Many manufacturers suggest roughly every 15,000 to 25,000 km or once a year. With Jamaica's dusty roads, it often needs changing sooner. If you drive on unpaved roads regularly, check it at every service.
Why it matters
A clogged filter makes the blower motor work harder, reduces cooling performance and can lead to bad smells as moisture and debris trap bacteria. Some people pay for AC repairs when all they needed was a new filter.
Musty smell that won't go away?
If a new filter doesn't fix the smell, the evaporator inside the dashboard may have mould growth. An AC cleaning treatment can help. A blocked AC drain can also cause water to collect inside the car.
Quick and easy
On most cars, replacing the cabin filter takes just a few minutes. Ask for it to be checked at your next service.
