Why Car Batteries Die Faster in Jamaica's Heat
Heat, not cold, is a car battery's biggest enemy. Here's why batteries fail sooner in Jamaica and how to get more life out of yours.

Many drivers think batteries fail in cold weather. In reality, heat does most of the damage. In a hot climate like Jamaica's, it's common for a car battery to last noticeably less time than the same battery would in a cooler country.
How heat damages a battery
A car battery works through a chemical reaction. High temperatures speed that reaction up, which sounds good, but it also speeds up corrosion inside the battery and evaporates the liquid inside it. Over time the plates degrade and the battery loses its ability to hold a charge.
Under the bonnet, temperatures climb far higher than the air around you, especially in traffic or after a long drive.
Warning signs your battery is getting weak
The engine cranks slowly, especially first thing in the morning
Clicking when you turn the key or press start
Dim headlights when the engine is off
A battery warning light
White or green crust around the terminals
A swollen or bulging battery case
The battery is more than three years old
How to make your battery last longer
Keep the terminals clean and tight. Corrosion increases resistance and stops the battery charging properly.
Avoid lots of very short trips. Starting uses a lot of power, and short drives don't give the alternator time to recharge it.
Don't leave accessories on with the engine off. Phone chargers, lights and the radio all drain the battery.
Park in the shade when you can.
Get it tested regularly. A load test shows battery health long before it leaves you stranded.
Choosing the right replacement
Match the battery size, terminal layout and cold cranking amps (CCA) to your vehicle's requirements. Cars with start-stop systems often need special AGM or EFB batteries, and fitting the wrong type can cause problems.
When to replace it
If testing shows the battery is weak, replace it before it fails completely. A planned replacement is far cheaper and less stressful than a breakdown on the side of the road.
