You don't need to be a mechanic to keep an eye on your car's fluids. A quick check every couple of weeks can catch problems long before they leave you stranded.
1. Engine oil
Check with the engine off and the car on level ground, ideally after it's been sitting a few minutes. Pull the dipstick, wipe it, push it back in fully, then pull it out again. The oil should be between the two marks. Oil that's very dark, gritty, milky or smells burnt needs attention.
2. Coolant
Check the level in the overflow reservoir when the engine is cold. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
3. Brake fluid
The reservoir is usually on the driver's side near the firewall. The level should be between the marks. A falling level can mean worn pads or a leak. Dark fluid means it's due for replacement.
4. Transmission fluid
Some cars have a dipstick, often checked with the engine running and warm; many newer cars don't, and need a mechanic to check it. Fluid should be clean and not smell burnt.
5. Power steering fluid
On cars with hydraulic power steering, there's a reservoir with level marks. Cars with electric power steering don't have this fluid.
6. Windscreen washer fluid
Easy to forget, but important in the rainy season and on dusty roads.
7. Battery
Not a fluid you top up on most modern batteries, but check the terminals for corrosion and make sure the battery is secure.
Watch for leaks
Look under the car where you usually park:
Brown or black: engine oil
Green, orange, pink or blue: coolant
Red or pink: transmission or power steering fluid
Clear and slightly oily: brake fluid (serious, get it checked)
Clear water: usually just AC condensation, which is normal
