A car that shakes or vibrates while you're stopped at a light can feel worrying. The good news is that the causes are usually easy to find with the right diagnosis.
1. Engine misfire
A misfire happens when one or more cylinders isn't burning fuel properly. The engine runs unevenly and you feel it as shaking. Common causes include:
Worn spark plugs
Failing ignition coils
Clogged fuel injectors
Vacuum leaks
A misfire usually turns on the check engine light and stores codes like P0300 (random misfire) or P0301 to P0304 (a specific cylinder).
2. Dirty throttle body
The throttle body controls how much air enters the engine. Carbon builds up around the throttle plate, upsetting the idle. You may notice rough idle, stalling at stops or idle speed going up and down. A proper cleaning and idle relearn often fixes it.
3. Worn engine mounts
Engine mounts are rubber and metal blocks that hold the engine in place and absorb vibration. When the rubber breaks down, engine vibration passes straight into the cabin. Signs include more shaking in drive than in park, and a clunk when accelerating or shifting.
4. Vacuum leaks
Cracked or disconnected hoses let in unmeasured air, causing a lean mixture and rough running. You may hear a hissing sound.
5. Dirty mass air flow sensor
If the MAF sensor is dirty, the engine computer gets the wrong reading of how much air is coming in, and the fuel mixture is off.
6. Fuel delivery problems
A clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump can starve the engine of fuel, especially under load.
What to do
If the check engine light is flashing, avoid driving hard and get it checked straight away. Otherwise, a scan of the engine computer and a few targeted tests will usually pinpoint the cause quickly, so you don't waste money replacing parts that aren't faulty.
