It's common in Jamaica to see drivers topping up their radiator with plain water. In an emergency, that's fine. As a long-term habit, it can cost you an engine.

What coolant actually does

Coolant, sometimes called antifreeze, is usually a mix of glycol, water and additives. It does several jobs at once:

  • Raises the boiling point so the engine can run hot without boiling over

  • Prevents corrosion inside the engine, radiator and heater core

  • Lubricates the water pump seal

  • Protects gaskets and hoses

  • Reduces scale and deposits that block cooling passages

What happens when you run on water

Plain water boils at a lower temperature than proper coolant mix, so the engine is more likely to overheat. Water also contains minerals that leave scale deposits, and it offers no protection against rust. Over time you can expect:

  • A clogged radiator

  • Rust and corrosion inside the engine

  • Water pump failure

  • Leaking gaskets and hoses

  • A higher risk of overheating in traffic and on hills

Premixed or concentrate?

Some coolant comes ready to use (premixed). Concentrate needs to be mixed with water, usually around half and half. If you use concentrate, use distilled or deionised water, not tap water, to avoid mineral deposits.

Does the colour matter?

Coolant comes in different colours, such as green, pink, red, orange and blue, but colour alone doesn't tell you the type. Different formulas use different additives, and mixing incompatible types can cause sludge. Use the type your manufacturer recommends.

Coolant wears out too

The protective additives break down over time. Many modern long-life coolants last several years, but they still need replacing. If your coolant looks rusty, muddy or has bits floating in it, it's overdue.

What to do if you've been using water

Have the cooling system flushed and refilled with the correct coolant. While it's being done, have the hoses, radiator cap and water pump checked for wear.
