Why Is My Engine Belt Squealing?
A squealing noise when you start the car or turn on the AC usually means a worn drive belt or tensioner. Here's what causes it and what to do.

That loud squeal when you start the car on a damp morning, switch on the AC or turn the steering wheel all the way is usually coming from the drive belt.
What the drive belt does
The drive belt, often a long ribbed belt called a serpentine belt, runs from the engine's crankshaft pulley to accessories like the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump and sometimes the water pump. If it slips or breaks, those parts stop working.
Common causes of squealing
Worn belt: The rubber hardens, glazes and cracks with age and heat.
Weak tensioner: The automatic tensioner keeps the belt tight. When its spring weakens, the belt slips.
Worn pulley bearings: A failing idler or tensioner pulley can squeal, chirp or grind.
Misaligned pulleys: Cause chirping and uneven belt wear.
Fluid contamination: Oil, coolant or power steering fluid on the belt makes it slip.
Moisture: A brief squeal on wet mornings can happen, but if it's frequent the belt or tensioner is likely worn.
When to replace the belt
Look for:
Cracks across the ribs
Missing chunks or frayed edges
A shiny, glazed surface
Squealing that keeps coming back
Many belts are replaced somewhere around 80,000 to 160,000 km, but condition matters more than distance in a hot climate.
Why you shouldn't ignore it
If the belt breaks, you can lose battery charging, power steering and AC all at once. On engines where the belt drives the water pump, the engine can overheat quickly. It's a small part that can leave you stranded.
Belt dressing isn't a fix
Spraying belt dressing might quiet the noise for a while, but it hides the real problem and can attract dirt. The right fix is to replace the worn belt, tensioner or pulley.
