Engine mounts don't get much attention until they fail. Then you feel it every time you drive.

What engine mounts do

Engine mounts hold the engine and transmission in place and absorb their vibration. Most are made of rubber bonded to metal brackets. Some are filled with fluid for extra smoothness.

Symptoms of worn mounts
  • More vibration in the cabin, especially at idle in Drive

  • A clunk or thud when shifting into Drive or Reverse, or when accelerating

  • The engine visibly rocking when someone revs it with the bonnet open

  • A jolt when you accelerate or let off the gas suddenly

  • Fluid leaking from hydraulic mounts

Why they fail
  • Rubber hardens and cracks with age and heat

  • Oil leaks soak the rubber and break it down

  • Rough roads and potholes add stress

  • Aggressive driving

Why it matters

Worn mounts let the engine move more than it should. That puts stress on hoses, wiring, exhaust parts, CV axles and other mounts. One worn mount often leads to the others wearing faster.

How it's checked

A mechanic will inspect the mounts for cracks and separation, then watch the engine while shifting between gears with the brakes held. Excessive movement or a clunk confirms the problem.

Replacement

Replacing mounts is usually a straightforward job. It's often worth replacing worn mounts in sets, since they've all aged together.
