After storms and flooding, some water-damaged vehicles are cleaned up and resold. They can look fine on the outside but hide serious problems underneath.
Why flood damage is serious
Water, especially dirty or salty floodwater, causes long-term damage:
Corrosion of electrical connectors and wiring
Failing computers and sensors
Rust in hidden places
Contaminated engine oil, transmission fluid and brake fluid
Mould and bacteria in carpets and seats
Electrical problems can show up months after the car seems fine.
Warning signs to look for
Musty or damp smell, or a strong air freshener hiding a smell
New carpets in an older car, or carpets that don't fit properly
Water stains, mud or silt under the seats, in the trunk, spare tyre well or glove box
Rust on seat rails, pedals, screws under the dashboard or other places that don't normally rust
Fogging or water inside headlights and tail lights
Electrical faults: windows, lights, the radio or dashboard acting strangely
Warning lights or stored fault codes
Check the paperwork
Ask for the vehicle's history and any import or auction records. Be cautious with prices that seem too good to be true.
Get a pre-purchase inspection
A professional inspection and computer scan can uncover hidden water damage, stored codes and corrosion that are easy to miss. It costs little compared to buying a car with problems that never end.
