If your headlights look cloudy, yellow or hazy, you're not imagining things. And it's more than a cosmetic problem: foggy lenses can cut down how much light reaches the road.

Why headlights go foggy

Most modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate plastic with a protective UV coating. Over time, sunlight breaks down that coating. Once it's gone, the plastic oxidises, turning yellow and cloudy. Jamaica's strong sun speeds this up a lot.

Road grit, car wash chemicals and heat from the bulbs add to the damage.

Why it matters
  • Reduced light output and shorter visibility at night

  • Light scattering, which can dazzle oncoming drivers

  • Makes the whole car look older

Restoration

A proper restoration involves:

  1. Wet sanding the lens with progressively finer sandpaper to remove the oxidised layer

  2. Polishing the lens until it's clear

  3. Applying a UV-resistant sealant or clear coat

That last step is critical. Without new UV protection, the lens will turn yellow again quickly, sometimes within months.

Quick fixes to avoid

Toothpaste and bug spray tricks might make the lens look clearer for a short time, but they don't restore UV protection and some can damage the plastic.

Replacement

If the lens is cracked, very pitted, or has moisture trapped inside, replacing the headlight assembly may be the better option.

Keep them clear longer
  • Park in the shade when possible

  • Keep lenses clean

  • Apply a UV protectant periodically after restoration

Check your bulbs too

While you're at it, make sure your bulbs are working and properly aimed. Dim bulbs and misaligned headlights are just as much of a problem as foggy lenses.
