The fuel filter catches dirt, rust and debris before they reach your engine's fuel system. Like any filter, it eventually clogs.
Signs of a clogged fuel filter
Hesitation or stuttering when accelerating
Loss of power on hills or under load
Rough idle
Hard starting or stalling
Engine dying at higher speeds
Fuel pump making more noise than usual (it's working harder)
Why filters clog
Contaminants can enter the fuel tank from storage tanks, fuel delivery or rust inside an older tank. Over time, the filter fills up and restricts fuel flow.
Where is the fuel filter?
On older vehicles, the fuel filter is often in the fuel line under the car or in the engine bay, and it's easy to replace. On many newer vehicles, the filter is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the tank, and may be designed to last much longer or only be replaced with the pump.
Diesel vehicles have separate fuel filters that usually need more frequent changes, and often a water separator that needs draining.
How often should you replace it?
Check your manual. Intervals vary a lot between vehicles. If you've had a batch of bad fuel or notice the symptoms above, it's worth checking sooner.
Protect your fuel system
Buy fuel from busy, reputable stations
Avoid running the tank very low, which can draw sediment from the bottom
Replace the filter on schedule
