When your car needs a part, you usually have three choices: genuine, aftermarket or used. Each has its place, and the right choice depends on the part and your budget.
Genuine (OEM) parts
These come from the vehicle manufacturer or the company that made the original part.
Pros: exact fit, consistent quality, often come with a warranty.Cons: usually the most expensive and sometimes harder to find locally.
Best for: sensors, electrical parts and parts where fit and accuracy really matter.
Aftermarket parts
Made by other companies to fit your vehicle.
Pros: usually cheaper and widely available.Cons: quality varies a lot, from excellent brands that match or beat OEM to very poor copies.
Best for: common wear items like brake pads, filters, wipers and suspension parts, as long as you choose a reputable brand.
Used parts
Taken from another vehicle, often imported or from local scrap yards.
Pros: cheapest option, and sometimes the only way to get a part for an older or rarer car.Cons: unknown history, remaining life is uncertain, usually no warranty.
Best for: body panels, trim, some modules and expensive assemblies where new parts are very costly, ideally after checking the part carefully.
Parts to avoid buying cheap
Some parts are worth spending a bit more on because failure can be dangerous or expensive:
Brake parts
Timing belts and tensioners
Steering parts like tie rod ends and ball joints
Tyres
Sensors that affect engine management
Watch out for counterfeits
Fake parts in genuine-looking packaging are a problem worldwide. Buy from trusted suppliers and be wary of prices that seem too good to be true.
Ask your mechanic
A good mechanic will explain your options and recommend where it's safe to save money and where it isn't.
