Hybrids like the Toyota Aqua, Prius and Honda Fit Hybrid have become popular in Jamaica thanks to their excellent fuel economy. They're reliable cars, but they have a few maintenance needs that standard cars don't.

The petrol engine still needs care

A hybrid still has a petrol engine that needs regular oil changes, air filters and spark plugs. Because the engine switches on and off often, using the correct oil grade, often a thin oil, is important. Check your manual.

The hybrid battery

The high-voltage battery powers the electric motor. It's designed to last many years, but heat is its enemy, and Jamaica is hot.

  • Keep the battery cooling fan and vent clean. On many hybrids, there's an air intake for the battery inside the cabin, often near the rear seats. If it gets blocked by dust, pet hair or bags, the battery can overheat and wear out faster.

  • Watch for warning signs: reduced fuel economy, the engine running more than usual, sudden changes in battery charge level, or a hybrid system warning light.

The 12-volt battery

Hybrids also have a small 12-volt battery that powers the computers and starts the hybrid system. If it's weak, the car may not switch on at all, even though the big hybrid battery is fine. It's often a cheap fix.

Inverter and cooling system

Many hybrids have a separate cooling system for the inverter and electric motor, with its own coolant and pump. This coolant needs checking and replacing according to the schedule.

Brakes last longer, but still need attention

Hybrids use regenerative braking, so the brake pads often last longer. But calipers can still seize, and brake fluid still needs changing, especially in humid weather.

Safety first

The high-voltage system can be dangerous. Orange cables carry high voltage. Work on the hybrid system should only be done by someone trained to handle it safely.
