The red oil can symbol on your dashboard is not a reminder for your next oil change. It's a warning that your engine may not be getting enough oil pressure, and ignoring it can destroy an engine quickly.

What to do immediately
  1. Pull over safely as soon as you can.

  2. Switch off the engine.

  3. Wait a few minutes, then check the oil level with the dipstick.

  4. If the oil is low, top it up with the correct oil.

  5. If the light stays on after topping up, or the oil level was fine, don't drive the car. Have it checked.

What causes the oil light
  • Low oil level from leaks or burning oil

  • Worn oil pump

  • Clogged oil pickup screen from sludge, often from missed oil changes

  • Faulty oil pressure sensor or switch

  • Worn engine bearings reducing oil pressure

  • Wrong oil viscosity

Oil pressure light vs oil change reminder

Some cars have a separate yellow or orange reminder for oil changes or low oil level. The red oil pressure light is more urgent.

Light flickers at idle or on corners

If the light flickers when idling or turning, the oil level may be low and oil is moving away from the pickup. Check the level right away.

Prevention
  • Check your oil level regularly, every couple of weeks

  • Change oil and filter on schedule

  • Fix leaks early

  • Use the oil grade your manufacturer recommends

A few litres of oil and a filter cost very little compared to a new engine.
