Power steering makes turning the wheel easy, especially when parking. When it starts failing, you'll notice it quickly.
Two main types
Hydraulic power steering uses a pump driven by the engine belt, with fluid and hoses.
Electric power steering (EPS) uses an electric motor and sensors. Many newer cars, including many Japanese imports, use EPS.
Symptoms of power steering problems
Steering that suddenly feels heavy
A whining or groaning noise when turning (hydraulic)
Steering that feels jerky or notchy
Fluid leaks under the front of the car
A power steering warning light (common with EPS)
The steering wheel not returning to centre properly
Common causes in hydraulic systems
Low fluid from a leak in hoses, the pump or the steering rack
Worn pump making a whining noise
Slipping or worn drive belt
Old, contaminated fluid
Common causes in electric systems
Low battery voltage or charging problems
Faulty torque sensor
Wiring or connector problems
Motor or control module failure
EPS faults usually store codes, so a scan helps find the cause.
Checking the fluid (hydraulic only)
With the engine off, check the reservoir level against the marks. Use only the fluid type your manufacturer specifies. Some cars use automatic transmission fluid, others need a specific power steering fluid.
Don't ignore it
Driving with low fluid can damage the pump. Heavy steering at the wrong moment can also be dangerous. Have power steering problems checked early, when the fix is usually simpler and cheaper.
