Brake noise is one of the most common complaints we hear. Some noises are harmless. Others are your car telling you something important.
High-pitched squeal when braking
Many brake pads have a small metal tab called a wear indicator. When the pads get thin, the tab touches the rotor and makes a squeal. It's designed to get your attention. If you hear this, get the pads checked soon.
Grinding or growling
A harsh grinding noise usually means the pads are worn down to the metal backing plate, which is now rubbing on the rotor. This is serious. It reduces braking performance and quickly damages the rotors, turning a pad replacement into a more expensive pad and rotor job.
Squeak first thing in the morning
A light squeak or scraping sound for the first few stops after the car has been parked overnight, especially after rain, is often just surface rust on the rotors. It usually goes away after a few gentle stops and is normal.
Squealing that doesn't go away
Constant squeaking can be caused by:
Hard, low-quality pads
Glazed pads or rotors from overheating
Missing or worn anti-squeal shims
Dirt and dust trapped between the pad and rotor
Sticking caliper slides
Other brake warning signs
Vibration in the pedal or steering wheel when braking
The car pulling to one side
A soft or spongy pedal
A brake warning light on the dashboard
A burning smell after braking
Why Jamaican driving wears brakes faster
Hills, heavy traffic, heat and dust all speed up brake wear. A car that spends most of its life in city traffic or on steep roads may need pads much sooner than the manufacturer's average.
Don't wait too long
Brakes are the most important safety system on your car. If they're making a new noise or feel different, have them inspected. Catching worn pads early is cheaper and keeps you safe.
