Throttle Body Cleaning: Fix for Rough Idle and High Idle?
Carbon build-up in the throttle body can cause rough idle, stalling or a P0507 high idle code. Learn the signs and why an idle relearn matters.

If your car idles roughly, stalls when you stop, or idles higher than it should, a dirty throttle body could be the cause. It's one of the most common fixes we carry out on Japanese imports.
What the throttle body does
The throttle body is the valve that controls how much air enters the engine. On modern cars it's electronically controlled. At idle, the throttle plate is almost closed, so even a thin layer of carbon around the edge can change how much air gets through.
Signs of a dirty throttle body
Rough or unstable idle
Stalling when coming to a stop
Idle speed that's too high or goes up and down
Hesitation when you first press the gas
Codes such as P0505 or P0507 (idle control and idle higher than expected)
Why it gets dirty
Oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system and exhaust gases from the EGR system mix and leave sticky carbon deposits. Short trips and lots of idling, which are common in city traffic, make it worse.
The cleaning process
A proper clean involves removing carbon from the throttle plate and bore using the right cleaner, without forcing the electronic throttle open by hand, which can damage it. On many cars, the throttle body is removed for a thorough clean.
The step people forget: idle relearn
After cleaning, the engine computer needs to relearn the new, clean throttle position. Without an idle relearn, the car may idle too high or too low, even though the throttle body is clean. Depending on the vehicle, this is done with a scan tool or a specific procedure.
Clean it before you buy parts
We regularly see owners replace throttle bodies or idle valves when a proper clean and relearn would have fixed the problem. Diagnose first, clean if needed, and only replace parts that are truly faulty.
