Tyre Pressure: Why It Matters and How to Check It Properly
Correct tyre pressure saves fuel, improves braking and makes tyres last longer. Here's how to find the right pressure and check it.

Checking your tyre pressure takes two minutes, costs almost nothing and is one of the best things you can do for your safety, your fuel bill and your tyres.
Why tyre pressure matters
Safety: Under-inflated tyres overheat, flex too much and are more likely to fail. They also make steering and braking less precise.
Fuel economy: Low pressure increases rolling resistance, so the engine works harder and uses more fuel.
Tyre life: Under-inflation wears out the edges of the tread. Over-inflation wears out the centre.
Comfort and handling: The right pressure gives the best balance of grip and ride quality.
Finding the correct pressure
Don't use the number printed on the tyre sidewall. That's the maximum pressure the tyre can hold, not the recommended pressure for your car.
The correct figure is usually on a sticker inside the driver's door frame, in the fuel flap or in the owner's manual. It is given in PSI, kPa or bar, and sometimes different figures for the front and rear or for a fully loaded car.
How to check it
Check when the tyres are cold, before driving or after the car has been parked for a few hours.
Remove the valve cap and press the gauge firmly onto the valve.
Compare the reading to the recommended pressure.
Add air or let some out as needed, then check again.
Replace the valve cap to keep out dirt and moisture.
Don't forget the spare tyre. A flat spare is no help on the side of the road.
How often to check
At least once a month, and before any long trip. Check more often if you drive on rough roads, carry heavy loads, or notice the car pulling to one side.
Tyres that keep losing air
If one tyre keeps going down, you may have a slow puncture, a leaking valve or a damaged rim. Pothole impacts commonly bend rims enough to cause slow leaks. Get it checked before it leaves you with a flat.
