The water pump keeps coolant moving through your engine. When it fails, overheating usually isn't far behind.
What the water pump does
The water pump circulates coolant between the engine and radiator. It's usually driven by the drive belt or, on many engines, by the timing belt or chain.
Warning signs
Coolant leak at the front of the engine. Pumps have a small weep hole. Drips or dried coolant crust around it mean the internal seal is going.
Whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine, caused by worn bearings.
Wobbly pulley. If the pump pulley moves when wiggled (engine off), the bearing is worn.
Overheating. A broken impeller or failing pump can't move enough coolant.
Steam from the radiator area.
Coolant level keeps dropping with no other obvious leak.
Why water pumps fail
Age and normal wear
Old or wrong coolant causing corrosion
Running on plain water
Contaminated coolant
An over-tightened belt putting stress on the bearing
Water pump and timing belt
On engines where the timing belt drives the water pump, it's common practice to replace the pump at the same time as the belt. The labour overlaps, and a leaking pump can ruin a new timing belt.
Catch it early
A small weep today can become a sudden failure tomorrow. If you see coolant around the pump or hear new noises, have the cooling system checked.
